So it’s been a long time since I’ve done an about me post on social media let alone a blog! So I thought that it would be fitting that I start fresh here and get reacquainted with you all!
So as you might already know, my name is Chris! Christopher if I am getting in trouble or for formal documentation. I am a Brisbane local, having lived in and around the Northern Suburbs for the past 35 or so years!
I wasn’t always in the fitness game, for a long time I worked in the IT industry as a Systems Administrator. But I’ve always had a passion for being active, especially through sport. At a young age I was involved in Soccer, Tennis, Karate & Hockey (field hockey that is). Hockey is the one that stuck and I still play to this day going on 24 seasons or so. I casually played a few other sports with friends along the way, Beach Volleyball, Futsal and a few other things.
But Hockey was and still is my dominant sport and is one of the main reasons why I am so determined to continue training and exercising so that I can play at the highest level that I can, for as long as I can. Almost every element of my training is to have some carry over element to my performance on the field. As a goalkeeper, speed, agility, power and strength are very important and a lot of my training reflects that.
You could definitely say that it is a big part of my Why. But it’s not the only thing. Back in 2012 I was looking at changing up my strength training. Because… Well you could guess it, I wanted a game changer for hockey! I found kettlebells, I am pretty sure it was an article in a Mens Health magazine. I read it, read it again and thought, hmmm, these seem pretty badass!
Shortly after this I had purchased my first set of kettlebells! A set with 4kg, 8kg, 12kg & 16kg bells! I played around and did research, I eventually stumbled across DragonDoor, RKC and StrongFirst! All of these companies had one thing in common. They were started/founded by or had an association with Pavel Tsatsouline. After thorough research and internet sleuthing, one thing was clear. This Pavel guy knew his stuff!
So down the rabbit hole I went! Learning and practicing as much as I could and over time the way that StrongFirst did things really spoke to me and how I wanted to train.
But the biggest thing from all of this was how impressed I was from what I was able to do and achieve with the kettlebells and how this changed how I approached strength and training in general. And some part of me wanted to learn more and be able to share this awesomeness with others!
That would be one of the other parts of my Why, learning and understanding the art of kettlebell training and how greatly it can help others from all walks of life. Whenever I see someone learn how to swing correctly when they’ve been adamant that they will never get it is always a joyous occasion!
So here I was, training in my garage gym at my then apartment learning all things kettlebells with a far off ambition to oneday, undertake the StrongFirst Kettlebell Level 1 Instructor Certification (SFG1). This is known to many as the gold standard in kettlebell certification and training.
Fast forward to 2017, Trent and I had formulated our plan to open our own boutique health studio and gym and for a good part of 2017 I was undergoing a specific training plan to prepare for the SFG1 certification in November 2017.
We opened our facility Balance to You at the start of 2018, bright eyed and ready to change the world! And I am proud to say that to this day, we have helped change the world for many! Showing everyday people the principles of strength training and how to apply skills to make them strong and more capable. And showing people that you don't have to be a massive bodybuilding gym junkie to be strong and enjoy training.
Along this journey I’ve continued to undertake formal and informal training and certifications to further increase my knowledge and provide me with more tools to help our clients. I’ve continued my journey with StrongFirst attaining SFGII (level 2) Kettlebell Certification and SFL, Barbell Instructor certification.
At the time of writing, I am preparing for the StrongFirst Bodyweight Instructor Certification and once complete and all strength tests passed and or recertified I will be among the ranks of the few SFG Elite, who have completed and passed all 4 StrongFirst Instructor Certifications.
Outside of the StrongFirst and kettlebell world, I wanted to improve my skills regarding nutrition and habit change. Which is why I undertook the Precision Nutrition Level 1 Nutrition Coach Certification. One of the biggest issues many people have today is that their habits and day to day lifestyle negatively impact their overall health. Having the skills to encourage positive lifestyle changes is actually the most important! We can work as hard as we like in the gym, but if our habits and nutrition choices are working against us, we’ll be spinning the wheels for a long time! And we might not even know it!
In 2021 I completed the BioForce Conditioning Certification to help improve my knowledge on energy systems and programming for specific sports and conditioning goals. But that is a blog post for another day.
But it’s not all about certifications and education. It’s also about passion and going on the journey. It’s a journey of discovery and it’s always a pleasure to discover, learn and practice new things and see how they can be implemented with clients.
And that’s what it all comes down to. Passion. Passion and drive to help others be healthier, stronger, less pained and happier. If I’m helping you to improve yourself and am able to provide you with simple and actionable advice that has a positive impact, then I am serving my purpose.
And continue my purpose I will.
